Use of KEM SAN~R to impact mortality due to PEDV and bacterial coinfection in a nursery

The first PEDV diagnosis in the United States was made in May 2013, and the virus was found in SE Iowa in December 2013. Bacterial cointcctions are common after a PEDV outbreak in nursery pigs causing mortality to increase.2 Nursery mortality was recorded in two sow farms in 2013/2014 and compared to the nursery mortality resulting from the reoccurrence of PEDV in 2018 in the same sow farms. KEM SAN~R was used in the 2018 PEDV outbreaks, but not the 2013/2014 PEDV outbreaks. KEM SAN~R is an EPA-registered proprietary formulation of propionic and other organic acids and is designed for the control of bacteria in drinking water for livestock and poultry. KEM SAN~R has biocidal activity against a broad spectrum of bacteria.
