Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is a small DNA virus globally affecting swine. Recent work has proposed a stability definition as < 1% of sows testing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positive on placental umbilical cord serum (PUCS).' PUCS have oftenbeen used for PCV2 testing on sow farms, although a time and labor consuming technique. Processing fluids (PF) are a sample easily collected by farm staff when processing piglets. The convenience of PF makes it an attractive choice and may help in determining vertical transmission as measured by piglet viremia.2 The objective of this study is to compare the ability of PF and PUCS to detect PCV2 in sow farms.
