Evaluation of the efficacy of ceftiofur crystalline free acid versus autogenous vaccination for control of Streptococcus suis and Haemophilus parasuis in a commercial swine production system

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) and Haemophilus parasuis (H. parasuis) are bacterial pathogens that often aftect pigs shortly after weaning and inflict costly damage to the health and production of pigs. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of a ceftiotur crystalline free acid (CCFA) (Excede, Zoetis, Parsippany, NJ) treatment at weaning versus an autogenous vaccination program and untreated group. This study is important because of the implications it has on responsible antibiotic use, production efficiency, and animal health.
