Stabilities and chemical properties of bare gold clusters have been understood in the framework of superatom model:1 Au clusters gain high stability when electronic shells are closed by accommodating magic numbered (2, 8, 18, 20, 34, 40, 58,…) valence electrons into the superatomic orbitals. Gold clusters stabilized by poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (Au:PVP) preferred magic sizes of 34, 43, 58, and so on, as revealed by mass spectrometric studies.2,3
