One-pot synthesis of polyether urethane and its nanocomposite

In this work, the synthesis of liner polyether urethane and fabrication of its nanocomposite has been done. The synthesis of polyether urethane (PEU) was carried out by reacting polypropylene glycol with neopentyl glycol in presence of MEK to get polyether polyol and after completing this process, isophorone diisocyanate was added to the synthesized polyether polyol for synthesis of polyether urethane. Physico-chemical properties of polyether polyol were determined by measuring hydroxyl number and intrinsic viscosity of polymers. For determination of functional groups and molecular weights, FTIR and GPC were used. Modification of montmorillonite clay was done using organic modifier. The interlayer distance between to silicate layers was determined using X-ray diffractometer. Then this modified clay was used to prepare nanocomposites through intercalation method. Polyether urethane and its nanocomposite have been used for coating and casting. Thermal stability of polyurethane has been determined using thermogravimetric analysis. Mechanical properties such as pencil hardness, scratch hardness, adhesion and flexibility of coated panels and tensile strength of casted films have been found out.
