Tracheostomy is an artificial airway for pressure positive treatment. Its set up requires an adapter for metal cannula connection. Objective: To create an adapter to be attached to the metal cannula and the exhalation valve. Method: Two prototypes were developed: one from machined polyamide and other from resin using a 3D printer. The tests involved leakage analysis and dimensions changes due to sterilization processes. Results: smaller leakages were detected when the resin adapter was used (18.8±10.78 1/m). Regarding sterilization process, the ethylene oxide affected the dimensions of the resin-based device, but the polyamide one remained unchanged. Concerning the hydrogen peroxide and the autoclaving there was no change in the resin model. Conclusions: Leakage testing has indicated that the device made of resin allows a smaller leakage compared to the polyamide and sterilization with the ethylene oxide affects only the resin adapter. The best options for sterilization of resin are autoclave and hydrogen peroxide. The prototypes have evidenced functionality and economic accessibility. However, clinical tests are required.
