The theory of ecological footprint and ecological carrying capacity is applied to calculating the ecological footprint, the ecological carrying capacity and the ecological deficit per capita in the northern coastal region of Rizhao city, Shandong province, China. The ecological footprint is evaluated based on the average ecological footprint per capita of Shandong Province for the study area. The results show that the ecological carrying capacity per capita is 0.72 ghm~2, and the ecological deficit per capita is 1.13 ghm~2, which is higher than the national- and world level and lower than that of Shandong Province, implying that the study area is in the state of ecological deficit and the population size has been overloaded. The results are useful for making improvement measures against the ecological overload status during urban planning and management.
