Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer in women. The main cause of cervical cancer is known to be the persistent infection of high risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV). For this reason, molecular tests for HR-HPV detection have been used together with conventional pathological tests in clinical settings for cervical cancer diagnosis. However, it has been reported that 10 to 15% of cervical cancer specimens are negative to HR-HPV tests. Therefore, in order to improve the sensitivity of cervical cancer diagnosis based on HR-HPV detection, it seems necessary to find additional novel biomarker which can complement the HR-HPV test results. Ki67 is known to be a cell proliferation marker whose activation leads to cervical cancer progression, and thus the Immunohistochemical test targeting Ki67 protein has been widely used for cervical cancer diagnosis in clinical practice.
