Many meta-analyses have reported the association of XRCC1 Arg399Glnpolymorphism with the risk of bladder cancer, but the results were conflicting anddid not involve the difference of the sexes in the risk of bladder cancer. We,therefore, performed a comprehensive meta-analysis to ascertain the association ofXRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism with bladder cancer risk in total population andmales (As there is not yet relevant research on female, only the males were analyzed.)Pooled ORs and corresponding 95% CIs were calculated to estimate the associationsbetween bladder cancer and XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism. The overall datafailed to reveal the correlation between XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism andbladder cancer risk in total population and males. Subgroup analysis indicated thatthe XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism has protective effects on bladder cancer riskin male smokers. A further large study was required to confirm the findings.
