Development of Sleep Quality Assessment Method for Elderly People Based on Unobtrusive Sleep Monitoring System

In this work, we present a method of sleep quality assessment for objectively assessing sleep quality and conditions during night sleep. This method utilizes some features during sleep, such as sleep duration, sleep latency, sleep efficiency and body movement, and defined the corresponding scale to construct an index assessing sleep quality. To obtain these features, we developed an unobtrusive sleep monitoring system, which comprises mainly of a sleeping sensor unobtrusively monitoring heart rate, respiratory rate, body movement during sleep and leaving the bed, and a cloud system processing nightly sleep data. To evaluate the validity of the proposed index, we employed 11 elderly subjects and collected their sleep data for one year. The sleep data obtained are further derived to features and patterns of sleep to calculate each component of the proposed index. As a reference, we conducted sleep surveys on subjects using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), which is a standard sleep quality assessment method. The results show that the consistency and validity of our method compared to the reference PSQI.
