We examined dynamic characteristics of the carotid sinus baroreflex in chronic heart failure rats with or without the treatment of electrical vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) (n = 7 each). The steady-state gain of the neural arc transfer function from pressure input to sympathetic nerve activity was significantly greater in the group with VNS than without VNS. In contrast, the steady-state gain of the peripheral arc transfer function from sympathetic nerve activity to arterial pressure was not different between the two groups. These results suggest that VNS improved the dynamic characteristics of the carotid sinus baroreflex by mainly affecting the baroreflex neural arc.
