An international market price of fishmeal has sharply increased due to its high demand for expansion of fish farm, over catching of fish species commonly used as fishmeal resource and execution of international ocean regulation. However, animal protein sources such as meat meal, meat and bone meal, blood meal and feather meal can not be safely used as an alternative protein source for fishmeal in the diet anymore. In addition, plant protein sources such as soybean and com gluten meals can not be economically used as the alternative protein source for fishmeal anymore because of their high price resulted from an expansion of biofueling industry. Therefore, a new feed ingredient that is for safe for human consumption and economically cheap to replacefor fishmeal in the diet for fish culture is highly needed. A commercially available tuna byproduct meal (TBM) has a high potential as the alternative feed ingredient for fishmeal in aquafeeds because of its high nutrient content (crude protein: above 55%, crude lipid: above 10%). TBM is a mixture of tuna byproduct primary consisted of tuna head, bone, fin, blood and skin after the process of tuna canning and soybean meal at a ratio of 6:4, fermented by Bacillus sp. for 48 hours and then dried. The purpose ofthis study is to determine substitution effect of TBM with fishmeal in the diet on growth, feed utilization and serum chemistry of Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli).
