Until now, most studies reporting on virulence gene expression and regulation in vibrios have been performed in vitro. However, scientists are becoming increasingly aware that growth of bacteria in complex environments of the 'real world' (such as a host) contrasts with that in laboratory cultures, and mechanisms that occur in vivo might be distinct from those that occur in simplified model systems. Hence, studies on virulence gene expression and regulation should ideally be performed where it reallymatters: in vivo during infection of a host.
