HOW TO OPTIMIZE AND SAFEGUARD WELFARE OF FARMED FISH? - A CASE STUDY OF TURBOT (Psetta maxima)

Current ethical concerns about aquaculture, which are broader than welfare offish alone, drive the preparation of certification schemes that may include consideration of fish welfare, as for instance in the Freedom Food concept for Atlantic salmon. Increasing calls from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and supermarkets also promote optimisation of fish welfare by using a certification scheme with appropriate standards. Furthermore, embedding in auditing procedures for accreditation is required to ensure that labelled products comply with the established standards for optimized fish welfare.
