Affordable, high quality Research and Development is essential in the development, testing and improvement of innovative products and services for an evolving and ever expanding aquaculture industry. According to DEFRA (2005) the average sponsored project costs in the UK increased 3.8% per annum over inflation, and were expected to be on average E62,183 in 2011. While this does not include R&D sponsored by commercial entities, it does give an indication that costs are increasing. For this reason, webelieve that cost effective, high quality research carried out to internationally recognised standards is becoming increasingly important in order to maintain sustainable investment in new aquaculture products and services.
