As wild fish stocks continue to struggle, we will increasingly rely on aquaculture to feed the hungry planet. Therefore we have to furnish aquaculture with valid tools to reach its goals. In the very recent past, molecular biology played a cardinal role in innovating aquaculture research (Gornati el al., 2005). An increase of EST availability in public databases for fish species of commercial interest (Chini et al., 2008), genomics and proteomic approaches applied to fish welfare (Prunet et al., 2012) and nutrition are just an example. Again, now new tools suitable for aquaculture improvement are available: among them NMR-based metabolomics and nanotechnology stand out.
