ASSESSMENT OF THE CONTRIBUTION OF MARINE AQUACULTURE TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF ISLAND REGIONS

This work examines whether or not aquaculture, especially marine fish farming, contributes to the sustainable development of the islands where they are installed, rather than examining the viability of the industry. Main questions are if there is a contribution to the local economy, and with which variables will be approached quantitatively the performance of the activity in all three dimensions of the sustainability (economic, social, environmental), with a clear distinction between activity's performance factors and factors of activity's influence in the region. There is a significant gap in world level, regarding the factors affecting the viability of an area when the activity is based on aquatic production systems, and lack of reliable criteria(biological, economic, social) that allow to propose policies, on which the decisions will be taken for the establishment of marine fish farms.
