Role of Safety Stressors on Proactive and Prosocial Safety Behaviors

Employees' engagement in safety is commonly identified as an important contributor to workplace safety within construction industry. Research has supported the effect of work stress on safety performance, while there is a lack of focus on the influence of safety stressors on safety citizenship behaviors (SCBs). The current study investigated the effects of the three components of safety stressors (safety role ambiguity, safety role conflict, and interpersonal safety conflict) on predicting two SCBs: proactive and prosocial safety behaviors. By collecting the data from 280 workers located in Chinese construction sites, the partial least squares (PLS) analysis result reveals that safety stressors have different effects on proactive and prosocial safety behaviors. The results show that safety role ambiguity and safety role conflict are more effective on hindering proactive safety behavior, while interpersonal safety conflict is more effective on hindering prosocial safety behavior. The findings emphasize the effects of different roles of safety stressors on SCBs and give managers a more detailed understanding of which practices devote to improving workplace safety.
