Like most high value aerospace components, aircraft wings are held in relatively fixed positions during manufacture. Their internal systems are installed by human operators entering into the wing box cavity as it is held at a static horizontal position. These are confined and cramped conditions that force workers to adopt awkward working postures which increase the risk of physical illness and hamper task performance. To address this problem, a study has been conducted to investigate a twofold idea for changing product orientation and accessibility: a) keeping one side of the structure open until a later stage of the production process and b) turning the product to improve access.
