To avoid the annoyance of audiences during operation of stage machinery while attending opera and theatrical performances it is necessary to set suitable noise limits. These limits have to be defined prior to the development process of stage machinery and clearly communicated between planners, contractors, directors, engineers and users. Moreover, such limits have to be chosen in correspondence to the background noise from other sources during the performance and sound from the performance itself. A safe way could be setting the limits as low as possible, to ensure inaudibility, but this involves the risk to heavily exceed the reasonable limits, which would result in unjustified costs for machinery developer and for the client. Therefore, it raises the question, which stage machinery noise limit are suitable for excellent performance practice and are justified from the economical point of view.
