One Health for the Control of Neglected Zoonoses: The Case of Brucellosis

Anthrax, bovine tuberculosis, brucellosis, cysticercosis, cystic echinococcosis, leishmaniasis, rabies and zoonotic trypanosomiasis are regrouped as neglected zoonotic diseases (NZDs) because they persist in resource-poorer countries and affect mainlymarginalized populations. It is often difficult to attract international attention for these zoonoses, of which some have been successfully eliminated in industrialized countries, however, with unknown investments. In resource-poor countries it is crucial to develop interventions for the benefit of service providers, livestock producers, animal owners and consumers — and this in the context of increasing market opportunities and protection from economic and climatic shocks. To mobilize decision makers and investors requires demonstrating tire importance of zoonotic diseases while addressing key challenges such as economic growth and poverty alleviation.
