Hyperbaric Oxygen as an Adjunctive Treatment Modality in Small Animal Medicine

Hyperbaric oxygen as an adjunctive treatment modality has been utilized in human medicine since the 1950s. Pressure as a treatment has been utilized since the 1600s. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the use of pressure greater than 1 atmosphere absolute (ata) while breathing >21 % oxygen. As an adjunctive treatment modality, hyperbaric oxygen has been utilized in a multitude of disease processes in veterinary medicine.Hyperbaric pressure affects bubbles and gas-containing cavities within the body. Boyle's law states that as pressure increases, the volume of gasses decreases. (Figure 1.) The solubility of gasses is enhanced, which increases the resorption and elimination of gasses.
