The World Small Animal Veterinary Association - Renal Standardization Study Group (WSAVA-RSSG) has developed and refined the diagnostic algorithms used for evaluation of renal samples from dogs with proteinuria. This work identified two major categories of proteinuric renal disease: those that are caused by immune complexes (IC) and those that are not. In the latter group, the most common entity resembled Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) in humans. As such, comparison of the clinical presentations and outcomes of FSGS in small animals and humans might elucidate commonalities and differences in their pathogeneses and prognoses.
