摘要

Aggressive goals for achieving "Net Zero" installations are being pursued by pilot site installations within the United States Army as part of an innovative initiative to go beyond regulations and executive orders in support of long-term sustainability. Only two of the 17 pilot sites are attempting to achieve net zero for all three - energy, water and waste - simultaneously. Under the Army's Net Zero Initiative, Army installations seek to: (1) produce as much energy on-site as they use annually; (2) limit the consumption of freshwater resources and return water back to the same watershed so as not to deplete the groundwater and surface water resources of that region in quantity or quality; and/or (3) reduce, reuse, and recover solid waste streams by converting them to resource values with zero solid waste to landfill. This presentation will summarize the challenges faced in developing an integrated Net Zero Roadmap for a large military installation, and how these challenges were addressed.
