Interface Damage Mechanics in Fiber Reinforced Plastic Composite - a Review

The study on micro structures and micro-damages in composite materials has been an important key in designing composite structures because it directly affects the mechanical properties and overall performances of the composite. One of the main challenging issues regarding micro-damages in composite materials is the interfacial damage, which is strongly related to the interfacial strength between fiber and matrix. A review on current research in the field regarding the study on interfacial damage and its evaluation, i.e., single fiber fragmentation test and push-out test, is presented. A brief explanation of the recent model development for evaluating the interface damage is also included. This review focuses on various techniques and parameters which demonstrate how the interfacial damage is initiated and what parameters are greatly making it worse. Discussions are extended to the suggestions for future works.
