ALL GUTS AND ALL THE GLORY! NURSING THE ACUTE ABDOMEN AND POST-OP ABDOMINAL SURGERY PATIENT

Patients can present to the veterinary facility with all sorts of complaints but a particularly challenging one is the "acute abdomen." This refers to a patient that presents with acute abdominal signs: pain, vomiting, diarrhea, etc that all point tosome pathology of abdominal origin. Is it a bleeding spleen? A mesenteric torsion? Necrotizing pancreatitis? Or simple gastroenteritis? And when does it become surgical? This presentation will focus on the abdominal patient, more specifically the patient who undergoes surgery, and how to approach, assess, and nurse them.
