Recent Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) jamming and spoofing events emphasise the current dependence of shipping on GNSS and highlight the challenges of establishing an autonomous ship's position reliably in extreme and complex marine environments such as shipping channels, harbours and offshore energy installations. In response to these challenges, an Innovate UK funded project, "AutoMINDER" is seeking to integrate available positioning technologies with new sensor types and new integration methods, while establishment of a standardised integration architecture that supports easy adoption is proposed. This added redundancy, diversity and support for graceful degradation to fail-safe navigation is applicable to a number of unmanned and autonomous ship operations.
