Impact of New Radiation Therapy Technologies on the Management of Brain and Spinal Tumors

Surgery and fractionated radiation therapy have been the most important tools for achieving local tumor control in patients with brain and spinal tumors. Both modalities are geographically oriented and abide by the principles that 1) microscopic tumor extension must be anticipated and addressed, 2) critical normal tissue structures must be spared, and 3) surgical decompression may be required on an emergency basis prior to more definitive procedures.
