Enhancing IEEE 802.11i Standard using Quantum Cryptography

Most of our social activities, financial transactions, and other sensitive activities take place online. These transactions are subject to the risk of being intercepted by malicious individuals or groups. The channels that carry this information use a set of specifications called 802.11 and 802.11x standards, created by IEEE for WLAN technologies. Unfortunately, these standards are not the most secure and use the WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) protocol which is not well designed and does not hold up to today's methods of network penetration. In this paper we discuss the application of quantum cryptography as a way of creating encryption keys for wireless and mobile environments, which results in a secure solution to the weaknesses of the IEEE 802.11 standards and WEP protocol.
