Durability and Stiffness Prediction Value of Asphalt Concrete-Binder Course Using Parangtritis Sea Sand

The asphalt road has become the favorite type of the majority of roads in Indonesia. Asphalt Concrete (AC) layer is a homogeneous mixture of aggregates and asphalt. Usually, the material used for making asphalt concrete mixture is igneous rocks in which the demand will be increasing in the future. Therefore, the present study intends to examine the alternative material as a pavement mixture material on asphalt concrete using sea sand by analyzing the durability and stiffness value though simulation using rain water for immersion. This research was conducted in the Pavement Laboratory of Civil Engineering, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta using 5.42% constant optimum bitumen content from previous study. The examination of the durability of was done on the samples that had variation of mixture, including 0%, 15%, 30% and 45% of fine aggregate total and also the 0.5 hour; 24 hours; 72 hours; 168 hours; and 336 hours immersion duration. The results were obtained using Marshall Test with diplo samples. Based on the findings,, it can be claimed that the sea sand from Pantai Parangtritis on the mixed Asphalt Concrete-Binder Course (AC-BC) can affect the durability of the mixture. The variation of 0% sand mixture indicates the Retained Strength Index (RSI) value with standard immersion for 30 min and 24 h is 92.78%, whereas the result of the stiffness value indicates that mixed stiffness value of the power tends to decrease in line with the increasing duration of the immersion and the final limit of the value below 75% or equal to 0.262. Therefore, it can be declared that the characteristics of sea sand material are less suitable as the materials of road at low vehicle speeds.
