Red shrimp (Parhippolyte uveae) is an endemic aquatic animal which has a great economic value for tourist destination in Tanjung Sanjangan (Tolitoli, Central Sulawesi). Recently, no genetic information included composition of mitochondrial DNA 16S and COI nucleotide of the red shrimp from Tanjung Sanjangan. Genetic information is important to be provided due to implementation of policy and regulation related to conservation program. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify composition of mitochondrial DNA 16S and COI nucleotide of the red shrimp (P.uveae) collected from Tanjung Sanjangan (Tolitoli, Central Sulawesi). A PCR method was used with primers 16Sar and 16Sbr for 16S gene, and LCO1490 and HCO2198 for COI gene. The results revealed the composition of mitochondrial 16S and COI nucleotides were different among the red shrimp samples within the population of Tanjung Sanjangan. The average 16S nucleotide composition of T, C, A and G of P. uveae from Tanjung Sanjangan was 30.65%, 16.73%, 26.76% and 25.86% respectively whereas the average COI nucleotide composition of T, C, A, and G was 26.20%, 25.79%, 26.12%, and 21.89% respectively. This finding indicates intrapopulation genetic variation of P.uveae investigated in this study. This genetic information will be expected to contribute for conservation of the red shrimp in its habitat and also can used for sustainable use in the future.
