OSTEOARTHRITIS IN COMPANION ANIMALS: THE PAST 50 YEARS AND THE NEXT 50 YEARS

Osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs and cats is common, very common. While objective information about the incidence and prevalence of OA in dogs and cats is lacking, its prevalence can be estimated from large patient cohorts treated by orthopedic services.1,2 By some estimates, OA is present in one fifth of all dogs and cats. The purpose of this presentation is to review the last 50 years of osteoarthritis management in companion animals and to discuss future directions for that field. Approximately 1,200 Pubmed.org-listed publications have included the terms "osteoarthritis" and "dog" over the last 5 decades (Table 1). During the same time period, 142 similar publications included the word "cat, 1,265 included the word "rat", 1490 included the word "mouse", and 49,004 included the word "human". In other words, 3 articles focused on OA in humans were published each day over the last 50 years. During the same time period, one article focused on OA in dogs was published every 2 weeks and one article focusing on OA in cats was published every 4 months. Reassuringly, the publication rate for OA publications in dogs and cats is increasing: in dogs, approximately half of the articles focused on OA have been published in the last 10 years and in cats, half of the articles focused on OA have been published in the last 5 years.
