MULTIPLE ORGAN DYSFUNCTION SYNDROME: DOES IT EXIST IN THE HORSE?

Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is a phenomenon of modern times and reflects advancements in critical care medicine.1 In the setting of the human intensive care unit, sepsis remains the most important predisposing factor that culminates inMODS. While sepsis is not commonly encountered in adult horses it remains one of the most common causes of mortality in neonatal foals.2 In order to answer the question at hand, "Does MODS exist in adult horses?" we must first define MODS, review how and under what circumstances it is recognized in other species and ultimately determine what it means for our equine patients.
