Multidmg-resistant pathogenic E. coli s an emerging national disease in veterinary companion animal medicine. E coli is an organism which responds to antimicrobial selection pressure by developing resistance (Miller 2002). Multidrug resistant E coli has been documented as a cause of canine urinary tract infections (Cooke 2002), nosocomial infections in a veterinary teaching hospital (Sidjabat 2006); and in fecal isolates in ICU patients (Ogeer-Gyles 2006).We have previously reported in abstract form(Boothe, 2005a) a high incidence of mdr in E. coli uropathogens isolated from canine patients admitted to Auburn University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital (n=175). Overall E.coli resistance to 17 antimicrobials included in our standard antibiogram was 31%.More problematic, resistance approximated 40% to 50% toward first (amoxicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, cephalexin and sulfonamide-trimethoprim) and second choice (enrofloxacin) empirical antimicrobals. A similar pattern was found in other southernVeterinary Teaching Hospitals as well (Boothe 2005b). As a follow-up to these findings, our report in progress (initial presentation in abstract form, Smaha 2006), Escherichia coli antimicrobial Resistance in Small Animals: The scope of the Problem, we prospectively determined the susceptibility of canine E. coli pathogens (n=376) causing spontaneous disease from different geographical areas of the United States. Of these isolates, approximately 50% were characterized by MDR, from the urinary tract (Shaheen 2010, Boothe 2010). Based on this data, we haveimplemented a prevalence study, funded by the Morris Animal Foundation, that focuses on the phenotyping of E. coli associated with spontaneous disease in dogs and cats. Isolates are subjected to C&S using custom made plates (Trek Diagonistic). To date, we have studied close to 1000 isolates. Approximately 75% of the isolates are from the urinary tract. Figure 1 demonstrates the distribution of those isolates collected thus far expressing NDR (no drug resistance), SDR (single drug or drug class), MDR (multiple; 2 to 4 drug or drug classes), XDR, (extreme; 5 to 6) and ZDR (all 7 drug classes tested).
