Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is the terminology used to describe the body s inability to localize inflammation, and SIRS may occur with or without infection. Extrapolating from criteria used in human medicine, diagnostic criteria forSIRS in dogs and cats were proposed (Table 1). One must document a patient to have two or more of the proposed criteria to diagnose SIRS. Some questioned the validity of these criteria as they lack specificity; subsequently a newer approach, termed PIRO, has been proposed. The acronym PIRO incorporated four factors (Predisposition, Infection, Response of the host and Organ dysfunction) and effectively expanded the criteria for SIRS by including physical parameters and biomarkers.
