Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (JvlhpJ is one or the most significant respiratory pathogens affecting swine, with an average $7.30 per head production losses in growing pigs.1 One strategy for reducing Mhp challenges is to complete a breeding herd Mhp elimination, which eliminates vertical transmission to the piglet. One of the key requirements of a successful elimination is confirmation that the entire herd has been exposed to Mhp. Conventional nasal swabs, oral fluids, and oral pharyngeal swabs, which have commonly been used to determine herd status have low sensitivity.2 A more sensitive ante-mortem procedure is needed to assist elimination projects, and recently tracheo-bronchial and laryngeal sampling procedures have shown promising results.2
