Leno-woven non-crimp fabrics (NCF) are a recently developed reinforcing textile for composites. The technology has been developed by FTA Forschungsgesellschaft fur Textiltechnik Albstadt mbH and Groz-Beckert. Different structures of glass and heavy tow carbon fibers have been produced and compared with corresponding industrial state of the art NCFs made by multi-axial multi-ply technology. The leno-woven NCFs have already proven improved drapeability, higher tensile and compression strengths and stiffness. Furthermore, the potential for a shorter infusion time has been shown. The leno woven NCFs can be produced with fine glass yarns in the auxiliary yarn system. Thus, cost effective NCF structures completely made of glass can be produced and shall improve fatigue properties. First trials in part production have been started to prove the advantages on part level and to detect potential for further optimization. The leno-woven NCFs shall be industrialized if the results are confirming the advantages found on lab scale.
