The feasibility of sodium silicate (water glass)-based adhesives was investigated for use in wood-based composite panels with density of approximately 750 kg/m3. The particleboard results met the EN 312 (Typ3) performance targets and additionally showed fire resistance on the basis of 30 min flame test. Shear strength testing of the adhesive using beech wood veneer 2-plys was enhanced by modification with silane containing amino groups compared to non-modified. The water glass adhesive modified with silane would be a desirable alternative to common synthetic adhesives by additionally having fire resistance suitable for industrial applications.
