Vehicle is one of the most popular transportation tools. But people have paid more attention on pollutions due to the vehicle exhaust since 1970s because of environment protection. Vehicle exhaust usually includes: C02, CO, HC, N0X, SO2 and particulate matter etc. These substances not only pollute the environment but also threaten human's health. So the detection and control of the vehicle emission is important. But traditional methods are slowly and low efficiency.A method of vehicle exhaust gas detection based on spectrum technology was introduced. The method adopts spectrum technology to detect different components of the vehicle exhaust. Spectral Feature of the different exhaust gas was analyzed. Then a testingsystem was designed. The system includes Near Infrared Light source, air chamber, lens, a spectrograph with CCD detector and a computer. When it starts works, the Near Infrared Light goes through the hermetic air chamber. At the same time, the gas sample is put on the top of the air chamber. Then the image capture device gets its NIR (Near Infrared Spectrum) information. And the information is sent to the computer and then processed by software. Consequently, the spectrogram which reveals components ofthe exhaust can be acquired. The method based on Spectrum Technology has the advantages of high speed, low cost and convenient for long-time dynamic detections.
