Development of a Charcoal Slurry for Compression Ignition Internal Combustion Engines

The compression ignition internal combustion (IC) engine provides an excellent platform for many different types of alternative fuels research. Compression ignition IC engines allow for the use of fuels that would not readily ignite by a spark in other engine platforms. This research investigated the solid biofuel, charcoal, in the form of a liquid slurry for use in a compression ignition IC engine. Charcoal slurries were produced through the addition of micronized charcoal to biodiesel and diesel fuel blends. Charcoal was micronized using a multi-step milling process using charcoal produced from both virgin and waste wood parent materials. Particles were analyzed using various techniques to determine physical and chemical properties of the charcoalused in the production of a slurry. Charcoal slurry was successfully tested on a diesel engine platform. This research concluded that the addition of charcoal particles to biodiesel increased the overall energy density per unit volume.
