The short period of rainfall in the semi arid regions of Nigeria makes it difficult for farmers to produce many of the staple food crops that are suitable for the different soils. In order to meet the ever increasing need of food production in the region, other measures like irrigation which could increase soil moisture at the time and point required is highly needed. This paper presents the design and construction of a prototype automatic irrigation control system. The system is made up of soil moisture sensor, microcontroller which uses radio frequency, analog to digital converter, comparator and a friendly user interface. Tests were conducted to determine the performance and functionality of the system. Results showed satisfactory performance andtherefore this microcontroller which uses radio frequency can provide a simple and easy means for farmers to directly access and manage their irrigation systems.
