摘要

As a pioneer of nuclear technology, the UK has accumulated a legacy of higher activity radioactive waste. Some of this has already arisen as waste and is being stored on an interim basis at nuclear sites across the UK. More will arise as existing facilities reach the end of their lifetime and are decommissioned. Geological disposal involves isolating radioactive waste deep inside a suitable rock volume to ensure that no harmful quantities of radioactivity ever reach the surface environment. This is achieved through the use of multiple barriers that work together to provide protection over hundreds of thousands of years. This paper presents the high level functional requirements for the GDF ventilation system and the illustrative designs developed for three generic geological environments. It covers the development of the facility and ventilation over time and will conclude with the practical challenges ahead.
