Because of the tragic fire incident in the tunnels south of L'Enfant Plaza Station in January 2015, The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has undertaken a comprehensive program to improve its emergency response to underground fire events. Several deficiencies were enumerated by the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) following its investigation of the incident and documented in its formal findings. The WMATA tunnel ventilation system, being over 40 years old, was designed and built before the advent of today's modern numerical simulation tools and standards. As such, even when brought to a state of good repair, the capacity and configuration of the system, is unlikely to meet the current requirements of NFPA 130.
