Improving the air quality of road tunnel discharges remains a sensitive issue. Air treatment is often raised as an obvious way but rarely applied because current technologies are limited to a few pollutants with moderate performances. Biofiltration - a purification technique commonly used in many industrial fields but never in tunnel environments - was tested through a pilot plant installed on the Thiais Tunnel (Paris' A86 ring road) to assess its efficiency at eliminating road airborne pollutants. The results were satisfactory but the technique needs to be improved to reduce substantial energy consumption and to optimise the large amount of civil engineering work involved.
