O-Yubari tunnel and consecutive four long bi-directional tunnels in Doto Expressway were newly opened in 2011. A Feed-back control system was originally installed to ventilate the tunnels, but the ventilation could not be controlled properly due to exceeding traffic volumes especially in tourist seasons. Furthermore misty haze in winter was the other problematic issue to be solved by ventilation. In order to tackle these issues, Model-based Predictive Ventilation Control (MPVC) has been applied to the tunnels. This novel attempt dealing with a sort of fog in addition to the conventional ventilation control targets such as visibility, Carbon Monoxide level and ventilation cost is explained in this paper. Especially, representative actual results especially regarding the fog control after MPVC installation are briefly described.
