This paper presents the coupled methodology followed to prove the proper functionality of the emergency ventilation system installed for the case of a 10 MW fire in the underground railway station of the Cross-City-Link Zurich. This coupled methodology encompasses the use of a) smoke tests with reduced fire power, b) aerodynamic measurements, c) calibration of the numerical model to represent the real aerodynamic conditions and d) employing this calibrated model to simulate a 10 MW fire inside a stationary train in the station using transient 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for four different fire positions.
