Since the ceiling collapse accident in Sasago Tunnel on the Chuo Expressway on December 2, 2012, Central Nippon Expressway Company (C-NEXCO) has been putting greater effort into preventing similar incidents in the future in order to improve safety. Ventilator jet fans are installed in long tunnels to ventilate vehicle exhaust gas. A jet fan is hung on the ceiling of the tunnel using turnbuckles. The accessibility to the jet fan is limited, raising the cost of safety inspections. Due to the accessibility, inspection intervals are decided based only on running time. However, jet fan accidents occur suddenly because of the impact of large vehicles or a change of environmental conditions. These accidents cannot be detected with the present time based inspection approach. To solve these problems, a real time monitoring system for jet fans is required. In this study, a basic study of an automatic damage monitoring method and vibration analysis for jet fan damage monitoring were conducted.
