'BEACHPRO'APP: DEVELOPING A STRATEGY FOR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN BEACH PROFILING

Understanding the processes that condition beach stability are based on the knowledge of the reaction of the seabed to oceanographic variables (waves, tide and currents). Therefore, it is fundamental to obtain a historic database that correlates these variables to the sand movement patterns that make up the beach from the dry sand dune until the first submerged barrier. The experience in generating, processing and applying such information in Yucatan, Mexico, has been disorganized at best. Because of this, BeachPro? a user friendly application was developed that allows the changes in beach profiling to be obtained and processed in real time. A methodology was developed for the local community to participate and integrate: a) understanding of coastal processes; b) diagnostics of the processes that generate erosion in time to implement corrective measures; c) participate in decision making and implementing knowledge based solutions; and d) continuous knowledge generation in coastal protection culture.
