High Temperature Simulated Distillation (HTSD) is a standard methodology12 routinely applied in petroleum laboratories for characterization of feedstocks and processed products.3 Users frequently inquire on four aspects related to the methodology: 1. Why HTSD provides results equivalent to physical distillation?, 2. Is HTSD inducing analytes' cracking under the set up high temperatures of operation? 3. Does HTSD provide results by weigth or by volume? 4. Why is HTSD so popular? This work attempts to shed light on the first three preceding questions; answering the 4~(th) is deemed deserves one further detailed article.
