As the result of recent forecasts by the EPA, a number of major utilities have announced the early implementation of their plans and schedules to retire some of the over 1300 U.S. coal-fired generators. It is recognized by the plant owners that current FGD technology, i.e., wet scrubbers, are not cost-effective for installation on older/smaller units (capacities less than the order of 300 MWe). Coupled with their lower efficiencies, they are unable to compete on the market. It has been predicted that if the EPA’s projections are carried out, energy costs will rise significantly, and major adverse impacts on the coal producing industry will result.
